Corporate earnings get into the act

Written By Unknown on Senin, 22 Oktober 2012 | 18.38

All eyes will be on earnings this week after last Friday's disappointing reports sparked a big selloff.

And even though tonight's presidential debate is supposed to focus on foreign policy, don't be surprised if Mitt Romney works the economy into some of his answers.

Caterpillar, Yahoo and Hasbro are among the companies reporting third-quarter earnings today.

Tomorrow, Tempur-Pedic, Whirlpool, Xerox, UPS and Amgen get into the act. Facebook and Net-flix also report so we'll see if any Silicon Valley darlings repeat Google's disastrous premature earnings release of last week.

The Federal Reserve kicks off its two-day meeting tomorrow and will make an interest rate announcement – no surprises likely – on Wednesday at 2:15 p.m.

Boeing, AT&T, Zynga, Akamai and a broad range of defense contractors and pharma companies report earnings on Wednesday.

The hits (or misses) keep coming Thursday with Apple, Amazon, Procter and Gamble, JetBlue [JBLU], Sanofi and Raytheon among the big firms reporting third-quarter earnings.

Traders also will get a weekly jobless claims report and pending home sales numbers to fret about Thursday morning.

Finally, on Friday, you can be sure the presidential candidates will spin the third quarter GDP report set to be released at 8:30 a.m. Comcast and Interpublic Group are among the firms reporting earnings that day.
