Blackstone chief
 endows scholarships

Stephen Schwarzman, right, the billionaire chairman of Blackstone Group, is setting up a $300 million scholarship for foreign students to attend China's Tsinghua University, the alma mater of senior officials including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Schwarzman, 66, is giving $100 million of his personal wealth to the Schwarzman Scholars program, which will enroll students from the U.S. as well as Europe, South Korea, Japan, India and other nations, according to a statement yesterday. The program is seeking to raise an additional $200 million and has commitments for half that amount from sponsors including Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Boeing Co., Caterpillar Inc. and General Electric Co.

Schwarzman said he was endowing the program to spur a greater comprehension of China by the U.S. and other Western nations.

Facebook to build $1.5B data facility

Facebook is reportedly looking at building a 
$1.5 billion data facility in Altoona, Iowa — an effort previously referred to by state and local officials as "Project Catapult."

The Des Moines Register reported that the facility is being touted as "the most technologically advanced" in the world and that the 1.4 million-square-foot project is expected to be built in two phases. It will reportedly include three 466,000-square-foot data centers.

 Apple, Delta Air Lines, iRobot, Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, US Airways Group, Xerox and Yum! Brands all release quarterly financial results.

 Colliers International has hired John Hines, left, as a vice president at its Boston office's corporate services division. Hines previously served as transaction manager at CB Richard Ellis and led the client services division of Trammell Crow Co.

 The Simon Companies, a Braintree-based developer, owner and manager of commercial and multifamily real estate, has hired Michael Scurti as the company's new chief financial officer. Scurti previously served in a similar role at Boston-based Trinity Financial.
